In order to better safeguard the Imperial Palace and Beijing, an impregnable defensive project known today as the Great Wall was proposed. The emperor’s father in law and trusted general Xu Da was put in charge of its construction. He started by completing a model Great Wall section for others to copy, based on experiences and lessons drawn from Great Wall projects in previous dynasties. That copy completed in the early 14th century, called the Yangbian Great Wall (or model wall on the border), still stands.
The Yangbian Great Wall set standards for construction materials, design, foundation preparation, as well as wall construction location choices. Since this section of the Wall, the last climax of Great Wall construction during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) was unveiled.

This trip is rated as moderate/hard; The participants should be prepared for 3-4 hours of hiking. The first half-an-hour of hiking is uphill on a dirt road with beautiful views of the valley. There will be 2-2.5 hours of hiking on the Wall, some sections are flat, but may be scattered with Great Wall bricks and other debris. Do note this is a “wild” section of the Great Wall that maintains its original building materials and has not been reconstructed. When Hiking down to the valley along the Great Wall, the section (about half-an-hour) can get slippery with the loose rocks. The trail off the Great Wall to the parking lot is an easy walk but is over-grown with vegetation in some areas. The hike through the villages and the exploration of Loess valley is an easy walk accompanied by some fun activities.
